History of the Committee In 1975, representatives of various Polish churches, organizations, and Fraternal societies joined together to commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of the United States of America. With great support from the entire Polish-American community and with dedication and effort by the members of the committee, the commemoration was brought to a successful conclusion in September, 1976. During 1977, members of the Committee expressed a desire to continue with some form of an organization and that the dialogue and combined effort would be directed toward solidifying relationships between the various Polish organizations.
This reorganization was completed and it was agreed to take over the responsibilities of the former "Centrala" under the adopted name of the American Polish Central Committee of Lawrence County.
What We Do The expressed purpose of our organization is to cultivate, enrich, and develop patriotic, social and cultural spirit with the Polish-American community of Lawrence County. The American Polish Central Committee has initiated a number of successful projects and fund drives and has been active in the local community. The committee was formed in 1977 following the local Polish community's group participation in our country's bicentennial celebration. Other local events included in a downtown rally in January, 1982 to observe Solidarity Day, participation New Castle's own bicentennial celebration and a testimonial dinner held for former WKST Polish Hour host Stephanie Kubinski. Since 1990 the Committee has held Lawrence County Polish Day in September at New Castle's Cascade Park. The proceeds related to these events have been used to fund a scholarship program for local college-bound students, with over $60,000 being awarded since 1982. The Committee also donated books and other items to the New Castle Public Library and made donations to the New Castle Playhouse and the Polish Relief Fund. A recent effort has been coordinating and sending volunteer donations to Poland to benefit the Jutrzenka orphanage. Cultural events sponsored by the Committee include a showing of the Polish Phoenix - 1000 years of Polish History and Culture. Also brought to New Castle were performances by the Rorantists of Krakow and Capella Cracoviensis, the Rzseszowiacy Dance Group, Andrzej in Concert, the Sobieski Family Christmas Concert and The Magnificent Mazowsze, a Polish dance ensemble. The Committee also sponsored bus trips to Polish cultural events held in Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Newer activities include the presentation original Polish films and the hosting of annual Polish Christmas Vigil "Wigilia" dinner. |
